RFID cards with a MIFARE Classic® EV1 1k chip are plastic cards with a standard credit card dimension (86 x 54 x 0.85 mm). They operate on a frequency of 13.56 MHz, which is a very popular frequency range for proximity cards that operate within proximity distances (usually up to 5 cm). The chip has a preprogrammed 4-byte ID number and 1kB of memory which is divided into multiple sectors.
Beside the most popular version with 1kB of memory and 4-bytes long ID, there are other versions of MIFARE Classic® EV1 chips:
- MIFARE Classic® EV1 1 kB with 7-bytes long ID
- MIFARE Classic® EV1 4 kB with 4-bytes long ID
- MIFARE Classic® EV1 4 kB with 7-bytes long ID
The cards are bright white, without numeration or other printed elements, and a top layer that has a coating which allows the subsequent printing on all kinds of card printers (thermo transfer or thermo retransfer printers).
When printing background pictures or other larger artworks, we recommend using a thermal retransfer printer. For serialization with QR codes, barcodes, or other numbering or personalization with names, you may use any kind of desktop card printers.
When ordering 500 printed RFID cards or more, it is usually better and more cost effective to print the cards with offset printing technology during a manufacturing process. This kind of printing requires special equipment and is usually done by specialized card manufacturers. For the printing, we usually use digital printing with CMYK colors which we combine with silk screen printing when there is a need for Pantone colors or metallic effects (golden colors, silver, glitter, etc.).
The typical printed RFID card contains the following layers:
1. A clear protective layer with special coating for additional thermal print,
2. A layer with front side artwork,
3. A layer with RFID chip and antenna,
4. A layer with back side artwork, and
5. Another clear protective layer with a special coating for an additional thermal print.
The quality of these layers defines the quality of the print on cards and the lifespan of the RFID chip.

Reading test for MIFARE Classic® EV1 1 kB with a 4-byte long ID
The reading distance between the card and the reader is affected by many different factors, like the size of the antennas and quality of the chips, the interferences of metal, and electromagnetic signals, etc.
We have tested the MIFARE Classic® EV1 cards with different kinds of readers and measured the reading distances. This is not an official test and it was made to inform you what reading distances you may expect with your application.
Below are the distances we measured with our test:
