Stickers with a MIFARE Classic EV1 1k chip and on-metal protection are ideal RFID transponders for product identification during a manufacturing process and can be attached to flat or curved metallic surfaces.

The MIFARE Classic® chips are very common and inexpensive proximity chips, used in countless RFID applications worldwide. Also, there are various readers and encoders available on the market.

These stickers are special because they contain a special layer called an ‘on-metal layer,’ which allows them to work even if they are glued to a metal base. The metal base disables the electromagnetic signal, and ordinary RIFD stickers on a metal base do not work.

The reading distance of these stickers is slightly smaller than the bigger transponders without such protection, and is usually from 1 to 5 cm.

The certified high quality adhesive 3M 467MP 200MP will take care that the transponders will be in their place a long time.

These RFID stickers contain a commonly used MIFARE Classic EV1 1k chip and have a diameter of 25 mm. They are made of multiple layers of soft plastic material, including an on-metal protection material and a layer with the strong 3M adhesive 467MP 200MP.

They are very commonly used for product identification and in various other RFID applications that require the chips to be attached to a metallic surface.

These stickers are bendable and they can be used even on curved surfaces such as pipes, curved housings from electronic devices, various jars, tubes, etc.

The MIFARE Classic® EV1 chip operates at a frequency of 13.56 MHz, it has a pre-programmed chip identification number, and 1 kB of programmable memory. The chip works according to the RFID protocol ISO/IEC 14443 Type A.

Although an NFC mobile phone can read the MIFARE Classic® chips, these chips do not support all NFC protocols and the programming with a mobile is usually not supported.

Some chip manufacturers offer similar chips and sometimes misleading customers, but we noticed that some readers can only read the genuine MIFARE Classic® chips. 

To verify the authenticity of your MIFARE® chips, you can use a mobile phone with NFC capability and a free app NXP TAGINFO.

Reading test for flexible RFID stickers with a MIFARE Classic EV1 1k chip and on-metal protection

All RFID transponders with an on-metal protection achieve a smaller reading distance compared to the transponders without the protection. We noticed that the reading distance gets even shorter when they are placed on metal surfaces because the metal weakens the readers signal too. Sometimes when the tags are applied on metal cannot be read at all, and in these cases, you have to add under a tag some plastic material or wood with a thickness of 5–10 mm. 

We tested these stickers with different kinds of readers and measured the reading distances. This is not an official test, but was made to inform you about what reading distances you may expect with your application.
