The Syris RD200-U1 is a UHF desktop reader for contactless chips operating in a frequency range of 860 – 960 MHz, and it complies with the global standard EPC Gen2 ISO/IEC 18000-6C. It is a USB plug-and-play device, which means that you don't need to install drivers. It works as a Keyboard Emulator by default, reading the chip ID and placing it on the display (inside the Excel table, Notepad, website, application input field, etc.). The default reading format is 24 HEX (sample reading: E2806894000040064121091F).
Setup Options and SDK tools for software development
With the setup application, you can set the format of the read ID code in more than 50 different ways, control the buzzer, add a prefix or postfix, set it as ‘Virtual COM’ or ‘AutoRead,’ encode chips, etc.
The reading power can be adjusted from -2 to 18 dbm. A smaller reading power means a shorter reading distance. The frequency range for the specific geographic area can be adjusted, too.
If you want to read the chip ID on a Virtual COM port, you can easily change the reader firmware and set it this way. There is another option for setting the reader working mode called ‘AutoRead,’ where the reader automatically reads the data from a RFID tag memory and displays it on a screen. It basically works as a Keyboard emulator for the stored data inside a tag memory. When encoding the chip, you may select your own key so the stored data will not be readable to the public or non-authorized users. To read the encrypted content, you have to use the same key on the reader as well. This is done with setup tools and when set, you may use the reader on any device.
When the reader works in Virtual COM mode, you get the UID code in the basic HEX format which cannot be changed with the setup tools. However, you need to change it after and this usually requires some programming.
If you place the same tag twice on the reader in a short period of time it will read the tag only once because it has the ‘Same Card Detection’ feature, which means that it will not read the same card twice in the defined time period.
The CD provides software development tools, including API, sample codes for BCB6, VB6, VB.NET, and libraries for VC, VB, BCB, DevC, and C#.
The RD200 works on Apple computers and devices with Android OS, although the configurator is only designed for PCs. If you set up the reader on a PC, then it will retain the settings on Apple computers and other platforms as well.
Supported transponders and chip types
The Syris RD200-U1 works with passive UHF transponders which operate on the frequency 860–960 MHz and contain an EPC Gen 2 chip like EM4425, Alien Higgs-3, UCODE®, Impinj Monza, and others.
It reads the UHF Stickers, Labels, UHF Tags, Key Fobs, Wristbands, with contactless chips. This reader is not made for tags with smaller antennas than 20 mm and they cannot be read.
Reader connection and housing
The RD200 has a USB Mini-B connector on the housing and it comes with a black 1.5-meter-long cable with a standard USB-C connector on the other side. The cable is black and it has shielding protection against electromagnetic interferences.
The Syris RD200-U1 reader can be used with PCs, laptops, and tablets with a USB-A connector. If you want to use it on tablets or mobile phones with a USB-C connector, you have to use a USB-A to USB-C converter or a special USB cable. This is not included with a reader.
The housing is compact and nicely made. On the back of each reader is a label with the name of the reader and a bar code. On the top right corner, there is a LED light which is red when the reader is on standby, and it turns green when it successfully reads the transponder.
Syris RD200-U1 Reader Applications
Some common uses for Syris RFID readers RD200-U1 are person identification for a time attendance application and other business applications, asset identification, parking systems, etc.
The reader is not designed to work on a metallic surface. The reader’s magnetic fluxes will induce eddy currents within the conductor and will cause poor performance or the reader not to work at all.
To ensure that the reader performs well, we recommend that you mount it on plastic, wood, or other non-conductive material with the thickness at least 1 cm or more, or you may use a special shielding material.
Syris RD200-U1 Reading test
The reading distance between the UHF tag and the reader is affected by many different factors, like the size of the antennas and quality of the transponders, the interferences of metal, and electromagnetic signals, etc.
We tested the RD200-U1 reader and measured the reading distances for different kinds of UHF tags in our offer. This is not an official test and it was made to inform you what reading distances you may expect with your application.
The test revealed that it can read UHF cards and tags at a distance more than 1 meter (with a max reading power 18 dbm). At this distance, it needed sometimes more time for the reading (like 1 second or so) and it worked better at smaller distances. When we placed the UHF card on a reader for longer time it read it only once. When we set a reading power to the minimum (-2 dbm), the reading distance was 14 centimeters. UHF systems can be sensitive to the orientation of the card against the reader and when placing the card parallel to the reader it should work the best. We tested how the reader works if the card is not 100% parallel and it worked well even if we placed the card perpendicularly on the reader. We were a bit surprised that sometimes the reader needed more time to read the card. We also recommend that you test it well before using it for automated processes. We noticed that reading distance for smaller tags was shorter, and tags shorter than 20 mm could not be read at all. So, before making larger orders of small tags, we recommend testing how they work with the reader.
