The RD200-M1-G is a desktop USB reader made by the trusted RFID reader manufacturer Syris Technology Corporation and operates on the frequency 13.56 MHz.

It stands out from the crowd because it is very reliable and it comes with software tools so you have many options to customize the way it works.

It is a Keyboard Emulator reader by default and it reads the chip ID in the 8 HEX format. The reader includes a CD with many utility tools for setting up a reader and the SDK software.

With the setup application you can set the format of the read ID code in more than 50 different ways, control the buzzer, add a prefix or postfix, set it as ‘Virtual COM’ or ‘AutoRead,’ encode chips, etc.

If you need to read the chip ID the same way that other NFC devices are reading (NFC phones, tablets, etc.), you have to set the output format to 14 HEX Reverse Byte. When the setup is done it can be used on different platforms including Android, Linux, and Apple operating systems.

It supports the reading of 13.56 MHz RFID chips accordingly to a protocol ISO 14443 A and B, and it works with chips like Mifare Classic®, Mifare DESFire®, Fudan F08, and NFC chips like NTAG213, NTAG215, NTAG216, etc.

INFO

The Syris RD200-M1-G is a desktop reader for 13.56 MHz contactless chips. It is a USB plug-and-play device, which means that you don't need to install drivers. It works as a Keyboard Emulator by default, reading the chip ID and placing it on the display (inside the Excel table, Notepad, website, application input field, etc.). It comes with software tools and can be set to work as a serial port emulation reader as well.

Setup Options and SDK tools for software development

The RFID reader RD200-M1 is usually used for reading the chip ID code in various formats and displaying on a screen. If you want to read the chip ID on a Virtual COM port, you can easily change the reader firmware and set it this way. There is another option for setting the reader working mode and it is called ‘AutoRead,’ where the reader automatically reads the data from a RFID tag memory and displays it on a screen. It basically works as a Keyboard emulator for the stored data inside a tag memory. When encoding the chip, you may select your own key so the stored data will not be readable to the public or non-authorized users. To read the encrypted content, you have to use the same key on the reader as well. This is done with setup tools and when set, you may use the reader on any device.

The SYRIS RD200-M1 is by default a Keyboard Emulator reader and it reads the chip ID in the 8 HEX format. The reader includes a CD with many utility tools for setting up a reader and SDK software.
With the setup application you can set the format of the read ID code in more than 50 different ways, control the buzzer, add a prefix or postfix, set it as ‘Virtual COM’ or ‘AutoRead,’ encode chips, etc.

To set the reading format the same way as other NFC phones and tablets are reading, you have to set the output format to 14 HEX Reverse Byte.

When the reader works in Virtual COM mode, you get the UID code in the basic HEX format and it cannot be changed with the setup tools. However, you need to change it after and this usually requires some programming.

If you place the same tag twice on the reader in a short period of time it will read the tag only once because it has the ‘Same Card Detection’ feature, which means that it will not read the same card twice in the defined time period.

The CD provides software development tools, including API, sample codes for BCB6, VB6, VB.NET, and libraries for VC, VB, BCB, DevC, and C#.

The RD200 works on Apple computers and devices with Android OS, although the configurator is only designed for PCs. If you set up the reader on a PC, then it will retain the settings on Apple computers and other platforms as well.

Reader connection and housing

The RD200 has a USB Mini-B connector on the housing and it comes with a black 1.5-meter-long cable with a standard USB-C connector on the other side. The cable is black and it has shielding protection against electromagnetic interferences.

The Syris RD200 reader can be used with PCs, laptops, and tablets with a USB-A connector. If you want to use it on tablets or mobile phones with a USB-C connector, you have to use a USB-A to USB-C converter or a special USB cable. This is not included with a reader.

The housing is compact and nicely made. On the back of each reader is a label with the name of the reader and a bar code. On the top right corner, there is a LED light which is red when the reader is on standby, and it turns green when it successfully reads the transponder.

Supported transponders and chip types

The Syris RD200-M1 works with different kinds of passive RFID and NFC transponders which operate on the frequency 13.56 MHz accordingly to ISO/IEC A and B.

Supported transponders are RFID Cards, NFC Stickers, Labels, RFID Tags, Key Fobs, Wristbands, with proximity chips from the Mifare Family (Classic, DESFire, Ultralight, Plus, etc.), NTAG chips, Fudan F08, and more.

This reader is not made for tags with smaller antennas than 20 mm and they cannot be read.

Syris RD200-M1 Reading test

The reading distance between the NFC tag and the reader is affected by many different factors, like the size of the antennas and quality of the transponders, the interferences of metal and electromagnetic signals, etc.

We tested the RD200-M1 reader and measured the reading distances for different kinds of NFC and RFID tags in our offer. This is not an official test and it was made to inform you what reading distances you may expect with your application.

The test revealed that the greater reading distance is achieved with RFID cards containing the chip MIFARE Classic® 1K and it measured 5,5 cm. The scanning distance of other RFID cards was good as well. The reader performed a bit poorly with RFID and NFC tags farther than 25 mm and it could not read at all tags with smaller dimension than 15 mm. We found and interesting issue, where some tags with the same kind of chip and same dimension worked differently. So, before making a larger orders of tags, we recommend testing how the selected tags work with the reader.

Below are the distances we measured with our test:

Syris RD200-M1 Reader Applications

Some common uses for Syris RFID readers RD200-M1 are person identification for time attendance application and other business applications, asset identification, contactless payments, etc.

The reader is not designed to work on a metallic surface. The reader’s magnetic fluxes will induce eddy currents within the conductor and will cause poor performance or the reader not to work at all.

To ensure that the reader performs well, we recommend that you mount it on plastic, wood, or other non-conductive material with the thickness at least 1 cm or more or you may use a special shielding material.
